Toilet Project

Throughout Anupshahar, hundreds of people live without toilets, simply using the fields as needed. The situation for women is worse, for modesty requires them to wait until sunset to relieve themselves. As one would imagine, the sanitary impact of this is huge, causing bacterial and viral infections as well as attracting insects and rodents.

The Toilet Project, conceived and started by Ron Fuchs, brings toilets to the villages of the girls of Pardada Pardadi. Building toilets prevents open defecation, which brings health, sanitation, and dignity to our students, their family, and their neighbors.

Ron Fuchs traveled to India to modify and supervise the World Bank Toilet model to fit the soil, weather and usage needs of the villages receiving toilets. He also funded the first 12 toilets built in 2008. A fundraising drive on Poopreport.com allowed readers to support a second phase of toilets.

Six toilets were completed by the end of 2008 in the villages of Dugrow and Shanjapur, and construction is under way to finish an additional 54 toilets.
