Volunteer English Teachers*

Over the last 4 years, Pradada Pradati Educational Society in Uttar Pradesh, India has benefited from the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteers from the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. *This opportunity is ideal for Former Peace Corps volunteers (RPCVs) or individuals with TEFL/EFL certification or Social Work experience. Specialized skills, including a post-secondary degree in education, teaching or teacher training experience, school administration/management experience, IT experience, public relations experience, and development program management are desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching English language courses to primary and secondary students.
  • Developing a class curriculum, plan, and teaching methodology appropriate to the learning environment.
  • Establishing a monitoring plan for class programs and progress, classroom growth, and student development.
  • Providing tailored curricula for special-needs students.
  • Regularly interacting with parents and community members.
  • Leading-by-example through active participation in school and community activities.

Skills and Competences

  • Experience working with and supervising children.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills essential, including in cross-cultural and diverse contexts.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) essential. Hindi an asset. Commitment to learn basic Hindi prior to departure desired.
  • Post-secondary certification, diploma, or degree. TEFL/TESL certification an asset. Acceptable combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • General knowledge of gender and diversity issues, children's rights and protection issues, and the Uttar Pradesh educational context.
  • At least six months experience living or working abroad.
  • Hard-working, flexible, and open to diverse experiences.
  • Ability to lead and work effectively with others to achieve results.
  • Commitment to building and developing the volunteer program.
  • Ability to live in rural areas and hardship contexts.
  • Prepare your personal and professional life to make a commitment to serve abroad for the full term of the service you pledge to PPES.

Compensation:

  • Basic room and full board in line with standards provided to local teachers.
  • Ground transport to/from airport and school upon arrival and departure.
  • Assistance to sightsee in Delhi.

Six-month assignments are subject to review with option to extend for one year or longer. Well-designed, short-term project proposals will be considered for three-month assignments. In addition to teaching English, volunteers with appropriate skills are encouraged to develop and implement projects appropriate to the school environment (examples include: database upgrades, marketing, administration, sports coaching, etc)
