How do we convince parents to send their girls to PPGVS?
Incentives. We provide students with uniforms, books, shoes, three
meals a day and bicycles (or buses for those who live too far to bike)
and ten rupees a day. We tell parents that their
daughters will learn skills that are marketable for the future - beyond
traditional subjects like math and English, we spend half the day
focusing on vocational training in home furnishing textile work.
Thus, as we explain to the parents, by the time their daughter
graduates, she will have developed highly-marketable skills in textile
work allowing her to produce high-end home furnishings within India and
for export. Moreover, PPES guarantees a job within the organization for
every girl that graduates.
